The Ultimate Leader: Stephen Bardo

Bardo, Stephen

Stephen Bardo grew up in Carbondale, Illinois, where he always strived to be the best at anything he did. This included school and especially sports. Stephen was an All-State and honorable mention All-American basketball player in high school and led his team to the state tournament. His hard work paid off when University of Illinois offered him a scholarship.

During his basketball career there, he lead the “Flyin Illini” to the Final Four in 1989, one of the most memorable teams in NCAA history. During his successful collegiate career, Stephen was also named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year and made all conference twice.

Stephen went on to play 10 years professionally with stops in the NBA (Dallas, Detroit and San Antonio) and overseas (France, Japan, Italy, Spain, and Venezuela).

Stephen is a motivational master. His work on the basketball court, as a television analyst with ESPN and on a speaker’s platform, his fast-paced presentations on leadership to youth, associations and corporations, provides audiences tools they can use immediately to achieve greater results in their professions.

Stephen is also an author, his book “How to Make the League Without Picking up The Rock“, celebrates Bardo’s BardoBk2experience in a message anyone can relate to; “Don’t Let the Stone Stop You.” Everyone has a league they aspire to make. Whether you have aspirations to be a doctor, lawyer, politician, teacher, electrician, or professional athlete, there is a level of success in every career field that announces, “You have arrived!”

As we talked with him today, he discussed his principles and his book. We discussed:

  • There is no secret to success except 10,000 hours.
  • Sports is the best practice to get you ready for business.
  • You have to have a sustained effort every day to succeed.
  • You can’t BE it if you can’t SEE it. Everyone that has achieved success has a clear picture in their mind about what they want in life. He can help you create your own picture to start you on your path to greatness.
